Carnelian is a variety of chalcedony (a microcrystalline quartz) known for its striking, semi-translucent shades of reddish-orange, orange, and reddish-brown. Its fiery colour is due to iron oxide impurities. It is one of the oldest stones used in ancient jewellery, prized by Egyptians for its beauty and its reputed ability to promote vitality. It possesses a waxy to vitreous lustre and is often cut into cabochons or beads for durable jewellery.
