Turquoise is an opaque, hydrated copper aluminium phosphate mineral. It is highly prized for its unique colour, which ranges from robin's egg blue to greenish-blue, often featuring a mottled surface or dark webbing/matrix of copper compounds or host rock (known as spiderweb Turquoise). The name means "Turkish stone," as it historically came to Europe via Türkiye. It possesses a waxy to sub-vitreous lustre. Due to its intense colour and cultural significance, it is a highly valued gem used in traditional and modern jewellery and carvings.
Turquoise is known as the "Stone of Protection, Communication, and Wholeness." It is one of the oldest spiritual talismans, revered for its ability to provide strong spiritual protection and promote physical healing. It stimulates the Throat and Third Eye Chakras, encouraging honest, clear, and wise communication, and fostering spiritual attunement. Turquoise promotes self-realisation, helps dissolve self-sabotage and martyrdom, and instils inner calm. It is believed to change colour to warn its wearer of danger or illness, acting as a supportive ally that attracts good fortune and friendship.
Hardness: 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale (it is a relatively soft stone, sensitive to heat, cosmetics, and oils).
Chakra: Primarily the Throat Chakra (for communication and truth) and the Third Eye Chakra (for wisdom).
Zodiac Sign: Sagittarius, Scorpio, and Pisces. It is also a traditional birthstone for December.
