Rainbow Obsidian is a variety of natural volcanic glass, formed by rapidly cooling lava. While its body colour appears dark black or deep brown, thin layers of tiny air bubbles or inclusions create an iridescent, multicoloured sheen—displaying rings of blue, green, purple, and gold—when polished and viewed in bright light. This beautiful effect is caused by the diffraction of light. It possesses a high vitreous lustre and is often cut into cabochons, beads, and particularly spheres for scrying, making it a dramatic and highly protective choice for jewellery.
