Selenite is a variety of the mineral Gypsum, often forming in clear, striated, crystalline masses, sometimes referred to as "satin spar" when fibrous. Its name comes from the Greek word selēnē, meaning moon, due to its ethereal, pearl-like shimmer. It is typically transparent to translucent, ranging from pure white to near-colourless. Selenite is unique in that it never requires cleansing and possesses the ability to cleanse and charge other crystals. It has a beautiful pearly to vitreous lustre. Due to its softness, it is mostly used for wands, spheres, and decorative objects, but can be set into delicate jewellery with care.
