Tiger's Eye is a metamorphic rock that is a variety of Chalcedony (microcrystalline quartz). It is famous for its unique silky lustre and striking bands of yellow, golden-brown, and reddish-brown colour, caused by alternating layers of crocidolite fibres that have been replaced by quartz (silica). This replacement process creates the stunning optical effect known as chatoyancy (or the "cat's eye" effect), where a moving band of light appears on the surface.
