Hawk's Eye is a form of macrocrystalline quartz that is the precursor to the more common Tiger's Eye. It is characterised by its dusky blue-grey to blue-green colour and a mesmerizing silky lustre that exhibits a distinct optical phenomenon known as chatoyancy (a moving band of light, like a cat's eye). The blue colour is due to the presence of crocidolite fibres that have not yet fully oxidised to the gold of Tiger's Eye. It is highly valued for its striking appearance and durability in jewellery.
