Peridot is a gem-quality variety of the mineral Olivine, one of the few gemstones that occurs in only one colour—various shades of olive, lime, or yellowish-green. This colour comes from iron in its composition. Historically, it was often confused with Emerald. Peridot is unique in that it is one of only two gemstones (Diamond is the other) formed in the molten rock of the upper mantle and brought to the surface by volcanic or tectonic activity. It possesses a beautiful vitreous, almost oily lustre, and is a popular, durable choice for all forms of jewellery.
