Tourmaline is not a single mineral but a complex group of borosilicate minerals that comes in almost every imaginable colour, giving rise to its name, which comes from the Sinhalese word turmali, meaning "mixed coloured stones." The various types include Black Tourmaline (Schorl), Pink Tourmaline (Rubellite), Green Tourmaline (Verdelite), and Blue Tourmaline (Indicolite). It is distinguished by its columnar crystals with vertical striations and is known for being naturally pyroelectric (heating creates an electric charge) and piezoelectric (pressure creates an electric charge). It possesses a vitreous to resinous lustre and is a popular, durable choice for all forms of jewellery and collector specimens.

Tourmaline is known as the "Stone of Purification, Protection, and Grounding." While each colour has unique properties, the family as a whole is celebrated for its ability to clear negative energy and promote health. Black Tourmaline (Schorl), the most common variety, is considered the premier stone for protection, acting as a powerful energetic shield that repels and transmutes negative energy, psychic attack, and electromagnetic smog (EMF). It provides intense grounding, stability, and helps to dissipate stress and anxiety, promoting a calm, centred, and honourable approach to life.

Hardness: 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale (making it durable for daily wear).

Chakra: Primarily the Root Chakra (especially Black Tourmaline, for grounding and protection) and the Heart Chakra (especially Pink and Green Tourmaline, for love and healing).

Zodiac Sign: Capricorn, Libra, and Scorpio. It is also a traditional birthstone for October.

Benefits: Provides powerful energetic protection and grounding, aids in transmuting negative energy and EMF, encourages stability, self-confidence, and self-mastery, helps to dissipate stress, worry, and fear, and works to cleanse and purify the aura.

Source: Brazil (major source), USA, Africa, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Australia.

How to use Tourmaline

Place it in your home: Use Pink/Green Tourmaline in a bedroom or living space to infuse it with loving, balanced energy.

Meditate with it: Place Pink/Green Tourmaline on the Heart Chakra for emotional healing and love.

Carry it: Keep a piece in your pocket or bag to draw on its energy of emotional calm (Pink/Green), particularly in crowded or draining environments.

Wear it: As jewellery (a pendant, bracelet, or ring is excellent) for continuous access to its loving and harmonising (Pink/Green) vibration throughout the day.

Use for energy work: Use a Tourmaline crystal (any colour) to actively sweep and cleanse the aura, visualising it absorbing and dissolving any negative attachments or energetic debris, and then returning the energy back to the Earth.
