Blue Topaz is a silicate mineral of aluminium and fluorine that forms in granitic pegmatites and high-temperature hydrothermal veins. Its blue colour, ranging from pale sky blue to the deeper Swiss and London Blue varieties, is most commonly the result of natural or enhanced irradiation and heat treatment of colourless Topaz, as naturally occurring blue specimens are relatively rare. It has an orthorhombic crystal structure and is one of the hardest silicate minerals, rating 8 on the Mohs scale. Brazil is the world's most significant source of Topaz, producing specimens of exceptional size and quality.
