Unakite is an altered granite — not a single mineral species but a rock composed of three intergrown minerals: pink Orthoclase Feldspar, green Epidote, and colourless to white Quartz — whose distinctive mottled combination of dusty rose pink and sage green has made it one of the most immediately recognisable and beloved stones in the crystal world. It was first described in 1874 from specimens found in the Unaka Mountains of North Carolina, USA — from which it takes its name — and remains the official state rock of Virginia. The characteristic pink and green colouration is entirely natural, caused by the varying proportions of Feldspar and Epidote within the granite matrix, and no two pieces display exactly the same balance of colour, making each stone a uniquely patterned work of natural art. Unakite is one of relatively few crystals whose two dominant colours — pink for the heart and green for healing and growth — align so perfectly with its metaphysical associations, making it a visually intuitive as well as energetically coherent stone for heart-centred work.
