Selenite is a variety of the mineral Gypsum — a hydrated calcium sulphate — and one of the most widely used and beloved crystals in the world, prized for its ethereal, translucent white to pearlescent appearance and its extraordinarily soft, silky lustre. It forms through the evaporation of ancient saline lakes and seas, depositing in massive beds of interlocking crystals that can reach extraordinary sizes — the Cave of the Crystals in Naica, Mexico, contains Selenite crystals of up to 12 metres in length, among the largest natural crystals ever discovered. Its name derives from Selene, the Greek goddess of the moon, a fitting tribute to its luminous, moonlike glow.

It is important to note that much of what is sold in the crystal market as "Selenite" — particularly the widely available white wands, towers, and charging plates with a silky, fibrous appearance — is technically Satin Spar, a different variety of Gypsum characterised by its parallel fibrous crystal structure and distinctive chatoyant sheen. True Selenite is a transparent to translucent crystalline form of Gypsum, while Satin Spar is opaque to translucent with a pearlescent, silky lustre caused by its fibrous internal structure. Despite being mineralogically distinct, both varieties share the same chemical composition and metaphysical properties, and the name "Selenite" has become so universally applied to both in the crystal trade that the distinction — while mineralogically important — rarely affects their use or value in crystal practice. Both should never be cleansed with water, as Gypsum's softness (rating just 2 on the Mohs scale) means it will dissolve with prolonged exposure to moisture. Morocco is the world's most significant commercial source, producing the vast majority of both varieties available in the global crystal market.
