About This Collection

Gold Sheen Obsidian is a variety of volcanic glass — a naturally occurring amorphous solid formed when silica-rich lava cools so rapidly that crystals do not have time to form. Its distinctive golden sheen is caused by the inclusion of tiny gas bubbles or microscopic crystals of Feldspar aligned in layers parallel to the original lava flow, which reflect light in a way that creates a glowing, metallic golden lustre visible beneath the surface of the stone. Like all Obsidian, it has a conchoidal fracture and no crystalline structure, and was historically used by indigenous cultures across Mesoamerica and the American Southwest to create razor-sharp cutting tools, weapons, and ceremonial mirrors. Mexico remains one of the most significant sources of fine Gold Sheen Obsidian.
