Howlite is a calcium borosilicate hydroxide mineral that forms as irregular nodules and masses in evaporite deposits, most commonly associated with borate mineral formations. It is characterised by its chalky white to off-white appearance with distinctive grey to black veining running through its surface, created by inclusions of other minerals within its structure. Howlite is a relatively soft and porous mineral, which makes it highly receptive to dyeing — a property widely exploited in the crystal market, where Howlite is commonly dyed vivid blue or turquoise to imitate Turquoise, or other colours to simulate more expensive stones. It was first described in 1868 by Canadian geologist Henry How, after whom it was named, following its discovery in Nova Scotia, Canada. The USA, particularly California, remains one of the most significant sources of Howlite.
