Sunstone is a variety of Oligoclase or Labradorite feldspar distinguished by its warm, glittering optical phenomenon known as aventurescence — a brilliant, metallic sparkle caused by the reflection of light from tiny platelets of Hematite, Goethite, or copper suspended within the feldspar matrix, creating a dazzling, sun-like shimmer that shifts and dances as the stone moves in the light. It occurs in a range of warm, radiant colours from pale champagne and peach to rich orange, red-brown, and the rare and extraordinary Oregon Sunstone — a gem-quality variety found exclusively in the high desert of Oregon, USA, that occurs in vivid shades of red, green, and bicolour, and is one of the few feldspar gemstones to contain copper as its aventurescent inclusion rather than iron oxides. India is the world's most significant commercial source of the warm peach to orange Sunstone most widely available in the crystal market, producing material of rich colour and strong aventurescence that is prized for both jewellery and crystal work. Norway has historically been an important source of fine Sunstone, with the mineral first scientifically described from Norwegian specimens in the 19th century.
