Rainbow Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass — a form of Obsidian — distinguished by its extraordinary iridescent sheen, which displays a stunning play of rainbow colours including violet, blue, green, gold, and red when light strikes its surface at the correct angle. This optical phenomenon, known as schiller or iridescence, is caused by the presence of microscopic inclusions of magnetite nanoparticles arranged in thin layers within the glass, which diffract light in the same way as a soap bubble or oil slick. In ordinary light Rainbow Obsidian appears as a deep, lustrous black — its rainbow only revealing itself when held to a direct light source or taken into sunlight, making each encounter with the stone a moment of genuine wonder and discovery. Like all Obsidian, it forms from rapidly cooling silica-rich volcanic lava, and Mexico — particularly the states of Jalisco and San Luis Potosí — is the world's most celebrated source of fine Rainbow Obsidian.
