Rose Quartz is a macrocrystalline variety of Quartz, its characteristic soft pink to deep rose colouration caused by trace amounts of titanium, iron, or manganese within its crystal structure, or in some varieties by microscopic inclusions of a pink fibrous mineral called Dididumortierite. Unlike most Quartz varieties, Rose Quartz rarely forms well-defined individual crystals, instead occurring most commonly as massive, granular formations of interlocking crystals within pegmatites and hydrothermal veins. Some exceptional specimens display a rare optical phenomenon known as asterism — a six-rayed star that floats across the surface of polished spheres and cabochons when light strikes them, caused by aligned needle-like inclusions within the stone. Brazil and Mozambique are among the world's most significant and celebrated sources of fine Rose Quartz, with Mozambique in particular producing some of the most extraordinarily translucent, high-quality material available — including the stunning dendritic and rainbow varieties. Madagascar is also a notable source of fine AA grade material prized for its rich, consistent colour.
