About This Collection

Moonstone is a potassium aluminium silicate mineral belonging to the Feldspar group, composed of alternating layers of two different Feldspar species — Orthoclase and Albite — that separate into distinct layers as the stone cools during formation. Its most celebrated optical phenomenon, known as adularescence, is caused by the scattering of light between these thin, alternating internal layers, producing a soft, billowing, cloud-like glow that appears to move beneath the surface of the stone as it is tilted — an effect that has captivated humanity for thousands of years and inspired its lunar name. Classic Moonstone displays this adularescence in a gentle white to silver sheen against a body colour ranging from colourless and translucent to peach, grey, brown, and green. The finest specimens come from Sri Lanka, where Moonstone has been revered and traded for centuries. It is distinct from Rainbow Moonstone, which is technically a variety of Labradorite displaying a multicoloured flash rather than a true Moonstone.
