Iolite is the gem variety of Cordierite, a magnesium iron aluminium silicate mineral that forms in metamorphic and igneous rocks. Its name derives from the Greek word "ios" meaning violet, a reference to its characteristic blue-violet to indigo colour caused by the presence of iron within its crystal structure. Iolite is strongly pleochroic — one of the most dramatically so of any gemstone — displaying three distinctly different colours when viewed from different crystallographic directions: violet-blue, pale yellow to colourless, and a deeper blue-grey. This extraordinary optical property led to its historical use by Viking navigators as a polarising filter to locate the position of the sun on overcast days, earning it the poetic name "Viking Compass Stone." Norway and Greenland are among the historical sources of Iolite used by the Vikings.
