Sardonyx is a variety of Onyx — itself a banded form of Chalcedony — characterised by its alternating parallel bands of Sard (a reddish-brown to orange Chalcedony) and white or black Onyx layers, creating a striking, high-contrast banded appearance. It is one of the oldest known gemstones, prized since antiquity by the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans, who carved it into elaborate cameos, intaglios, and seals — its hardness and layered structure making it ideal for detailed carving work. It is worth noting that much of the material commercially sold as Sardonyx today — including the vivid, high-contrast banded palm stones widely available in the crystal market — is in fact heat-treated or dyed Banded Agate rather than true natural Sardonyx. True Sardonyx displays its characteristic red-brown and white banding naturally, without enhancement, and is considerably rarer than the treated material commonly available.
