Tanzanite is a variety of the mineral Zoisite — a calcium aluminium silicate — and one of the most extraordinary and geologically remarkable gemstones in the world. It is found in only one location on Earth: a tiny mining area of approximately 7 square kilometres in the Merelani Hills of northern Tanzania, in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro — making it estimated to be at least 1,000 times rarer than Diamond. It was discovered in 1967 by a Maasai tribesman named Ali Juuyawatu and subsequently brought to global attention by Tiffany & Co., who named it after its country of origin and launched it to the world as one of the most significant gemstone discoveries of the 20th century. Tanzanite is celebrated for its extraordinary trichroism — the ability to display three different colours simultaneously depending on the angle from which it is viewed: deep blue-violet, burgundy red, and bronze-yellow — with the finest specimens displaying a rich, saturated blue-violet of incomparable depth and beauty. Because its only known deposit is finite and actively being mined, Tanzanite is considered a genuinely endangered gemstone — one that may be entirely exhausted within decades, making every specimen a truly irreplaceable piece of the earth's geological heritage.
