Hematite is an iron oxide mineral and one of the most abundant iron-bearing minerals on earth, occurring in a wide variety of geological environments including sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rocks. Its name derives from the Greek word "haima" meaning blood, a reference to the characteristic red streak it leaves when scratched across an unglazed porcelain surface — a striking contrast to its outward appearance of metallic silver-grey to black. Hematite is the primary ore of iron and has been mined for thousands of years, playing a foundational role in human civilisation through its use in iron and steel production. The distinctive red ochre pigment used in prehistoric cave paintings across the world is derived from powdered Hematite, making it one of the earliest known pigments used by humans.
