Chrysoprase is a nickel-bearing variety of Chalcedony, a microcrystalline form of Quartz, and is distinguished by its vivid apple-green to emerald-green colour caused by trace amounts of nickel within its structure. It is one of the rarest and most valuable varieties of Chalcedony, and its colour can fade with prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or heat. Australia, particularly the Marlborough district of Queensland, is the world's most significant source of fine Chrysoprase and has been producing gem-quality material since the 1960s. It was highly prized in ancient Greece and Rome, and Alexander the Great is said to have worn a Chrysoprase girdle into battle for protection and victory.
