Petrified Wood is not a mineral in the conventional sense but a fossil — the preserved remains of ancient trees in which the original organic wood material has been replaced, molecule by molecule, by silica and other minerals over millions of years through a process known as permineralisation. As silica-rich groundwater percolated through buried wood, it gradually dissolved the organic cellular structure and deposited minerals — most commonly Quartz, Chalcedony, or Opal — in its place, preserving the original cellular structure, growth rings, and even bark texture of the tree in extraordinary detail while transforming it entirely into stone. The colours of Petrified Wood — ranging from creamy white, tan, and brown to vivid red, orange, yellow, green, and black — are determined by the specific minerals present during the replacement process, with iron oxides producing reds and yellows, manganese producing blacks and blues, and carbon producing grey tones. The Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona, USA, contains one of the world's most spectacular and extensive deposits of Petrified Wood, with specimens dating back approximately 225 million years to the Late Triassic period. Madagascar produces some of the most visually striking and collector-prized specimens available on the global market.
