Kyanite is an aluminium silicate mineral that forms in metamorphic rocks subjected to high pressure during tectonic activity, most commonly occurring as long, bladed crystals with a distinctive striated surface. It is one of the few minerals in existence with a markedly different hardness depending on the direction in which it is measured — ranging from 4.5 parallel to its length to 7 perpendicular to it — a property known as anisotropy that makes it both fascinating to mineralogists and challenging to cut as a gemstone. Its most familiar colour is a striking blue, ranging from pale sky blue to deep sapphire, though it also occurs in green, orange, black, and colourless varieties. Blue Kyanite's colour is caused by trace amounts of iron and titanium within its crystal structure. Brazil is the world's most significant source of gem-quality blue Kyanite, producing the finest and most vividly coloured specimens available.
