Larvikite is an igneous rock belonging to the monzonite family and is composed primarily of Feldspar, with smaller amounts of Pyroxene, Biotite, and other minerals. It is best known for its distinctive dark grey to almost black appearance, often displaying flashes of silvery-blue or blue-grey when the stone is viewed under light at certain angles. This subtle shimmer, known as the Schiller effect, is caused by light reflecting from the internal structure of its Feldspar crystals.Larvikite is named after the town of Larvik in southeastern Norway, where it is extensively quarried and where some of the most notable deposits are found. It formed deep within the Earth's crust from slowly cooling magma, allowing large crystals to develop within the rock over long periods of time. Its combination of deep colouring, natural crystal structure, and characteristic blue-silver flashes makes Larvikite a distinctive and highly sought-after decorative and gemstone material.
