Ocean Jasper, also known as Sea Jasper or Orbicular Jasper, is a rare and visually spectacular variety of orbicular Chalcedony found exclusively along the remote north-western coastline of Madagascar, where deposits are accessible only by boat and only at low tide — making it one of the most uniquely and dramatically sourced stones in the crystal world. It is characterised by its extraordinary orbicular patterning — concentric circles and spherical orbs of varying sizes in a breathtaking range of colours including green, white, pink, red, yellow, brown, and grey — set against a richly patterned matrix of contrasting colours and textures. The orbs form through a process of spherulitic crystallisation, in which silica-rich fluids crystallise outward from a central nucleation point in radiating patterns, creating the characteristic circular formations. Ocean Jasper was essentially unknown to the wider crystal market until its rediscovery in 1999, and as the known deposits are finite and increasingly depleted, it is considered a stone of growing rarity and collector value.
