About This Collection

Opal is a hydrated amorphous form of silica — technically a mineraloid rather than a true crystalline mineral — composed of microscopic spheres of silica arranged in a regular grid-like pattern, with water content typically ranging from 3 to 21 percent of its total weight. Its extraordinary play of colour, known as opalescence or play-of-colour, is caused by the diffraction and interference of light passing through and between these uniformly sized silica spheres, producing a shifting, spectral display of colour across the full visible spectrum. The size of the silica spheres determines which colours are produced — smaller spheres diffract violet and blue light, larger spheres diffract red and orange. Australia is the world's dominant source of Opal, producing approximately 95 percent of the world's precious Opal supply, with the Lightning Ridge region of New South Wales renowned for the extraordinarily rare and valuable Black Opal — considered the most prized variety in existence. Ethiopia has emerged as a significant secondary source since the early 2000s, producing vivid, highly transparent specimens with exceptional play-of-colour. Mexican Fire Opal, distinguished by its translucent orange to red body colour, is a celebrated variety in its own right.
