It is characterised by its extraordinary patterns of cream, tan, brown, red, and black, forming intricate circular, eye-like orbs and sweeping landscape formations within a fine-grained microcrystalline Quartz matrix. Like all true Jaspers, it is an opaque variety of Chalcedony whose complex patterning is created by the presence of various mineral impurities — primarily iron oxides and clay minerals — distributed throughout the silica matrix during its formation in volcanic and hydrothermal environments. Sulawesi has emerged as one of the most exciting sources of unique and visually spectacular Jasper varieties in the world, with Maligano Jasper being among the most sought-after for its bold, graphic patterning and warm, earthy colour palette.
