Lapis Lazuli is not a single mineral but a metamorphic rock composed primarily of Lazurite — a blue sulphur-bearing silicate mineral responsible for its iconic deep blue colour — along with varying amounts of Calcite, Pyrite, and other minerals. Its characteristic golden flecks are caused by inclusions of Pyrite, and its white patches by veins of Calcite; the finest quality specimens display a deep, uniform royal blue with minimal white Calcite and an even distribution of golden Pyrite throughout. The Sar-e-Sang deposit in the Badakhshan province of Afghanistan has been the world's most prized and significant source of Lapis Lazuli for over 6,000 years, supplying the ancient civilisations of Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, and Rome with one of the most coveted materials in the ancient world. Ground Lapis Lazuli was the source of Ultramarine — the most expensive and prized blue pigment in Renaissance art — used by masters including Vermeer and Michelangelo in their most celebrated works.
