Freshwater Pearls are organic gemstones produced by freshwater mussels, primarily of the family Unionidae, cultivated predominantly in the lakes, rivers, and ponds of China which accounts for the vast majority of the world's freshwater pearl production. Unlike saltwater pearls which typically produce a single pearl per oyster, freshwater mussels can produce up to 50 pearls simultaneously, making them more accessible while still retaining extraordinary natural beauty. A Pearl forms when an irritant — typically a small piece of tissue or shell — is introduced into the mollusc, which responds by secreting layer upon layer of nacre, a crystalline substance composed of aragonite and conchiolin, around the irritant over several years. Each Pearl is entirely unique in its shape, lustre, and surface character, a testament to the living creature that created it.
