Midnight Lace Obsidian is a rare and visually striking variety of volcanic glass characterised by its deep black base interlaced with delicate, flowing bands of clear and smoky Obsidian that create an intricate lace-like patterning throughout the stone. Like all Obsidian, it forms when silica-rich lava cools so rapidly that a crystalline structure cannot develop, producing a naturally occurring amorphous glass. The distinctive alternating black and clear or smoky banding is created by variations in the composition and gas content of the flowing lava as it cools, with layers of differing silica concentration and transparency folding and interweaving before the material solidifies. The primary source of Midnight Lace Obsidian is the Caucasus Mountains of Armenia, with smaller and highly sought-after deposits also found in Oregon in the Pacific Northwest of the United States.
