Morganite is a gem variety of Beryl, a beryllium aluminium silicate mineral that also produces Emerald in its green form and Aquamarine in its blue-green form. It occurs in a beautiful range of colours including pink, peach, yellow, blue, and green, with the colour variations caused by differing trace mineral impurities within its crystal structure — manganese producing the pink and peach tones, while iron influences the blue and green varieties. The finest pink and peach specimens display a vivid, saturated rose to salmon colour that rivals the most prized pink gemstones in the world. Morganite was first described in 1910 from specimens found in Madagascar and was named in honour of the American financier and gem enthusiast J.P. Morgan by the renowned gemologist George Frederick Kunz — the same mineralogist after whom Kunzite was named. Brazil and Madagascar are the most significant sources of fine gem-quality Morganite, with exceptional specimens also found in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
