Emerald is a precious variety of Beryl, a beryllium aluminium silicate mineral, whose rich green colour is caused by trace amounts of chromium and sometimes vanadium within its crystal structure. It forms in metamorphic rocks, granitic pegmatites, and hydrothermal veins, and is one of the four recognised precious gemstones alongside Diamond, Ruby, and Sapphire. Colombia is the world's most prized source of Emerald, producing stones of an unparalleled deep, vivid green known in the trade as "Colombian green."
