Unicorn Jasper is a trade name for a colourful ornamental stone composed primarily of Lepidolite, Pink Tourmaline (Rubellite), Smoky Quartz, and Cleavelandite Feldspar within a granitic pegmatite matrix. Its distinctive appearance is created by the natural combination of soft pinks, purples, creams, greys, and occasional black veining, producing the whimsical and pastel-like colour palette that inspired its modern name. Despite being sold as a Jasper, Unicorn Jasper is not a true Jasper in the geological sense, as it is not a microcrystalline Quartz rock but rather a coarse-grained assemblage of several minerals formed during the final stages of pegmatite crystallisation. The purple and lilac tones are derived from Lepidolite, a lithium-rich mica, while the pink hues come from Rubellite Tourmaline and the white to cream areas from Cleavelandite. Most Unicorn Jasper on the market originates from Madagascar, whose pegmatite deposits are renowned for producing exceptionally colourful and aesthetically striking mineral combinations.
