Polychrome Jasper, also known as Desert Jasper, is a rare and visually spectacular variety of Jasper discovered in Madagascar in 2008 during the search for Ocean Jasper deposits. It is distinguished by its extraordinarily vivid and varied colour palette — sweeping bands and landscapes of terracotta, rust, brick red, burnt orange, sandy cream, warm brown, and earthy yellow — all flowing together in bold, painterly formations that evoke the dramatic desert landscapes of its island home. Like all Jaspers, it is a microcrystalline form of Quartz, its rich colouration produced by varying concentrations of iron oxides and other mineral impurities within the silica matrix. As a relatively recent discovery with a geographically limited source, fine Polychrome Jasper is considered a stone of genuine rarity and growing collector value.
