Kunzite is the pink to violet gem variety of Spodumene, a lithium aluminium silicate mineral that forms in lithium-rich granitic pegmatites. Its delicate pink to lilac colour is caused by trace amounts of manganese within its crystal structure, and its colour can range from the palest blush pink to a deep, vivid violet-pink in the finest specimens. Kunzite is strongly pleochroic, displaying different intensities of colour when viewed from different crystallographic directions, and is also known to fade with prolonged exposure to strong sunlight — a characteristic that has earned it the nickname "evening stone" as it is best worn and displayed away from direct light. It was first described in 1902 and named in honour of the renowned American gemologist George Frederick Kunz, who was the first to characterise it as a distinct gem variety. Afghanistan and Brazil are among the most significant sources of fine gem-quality Kunzite.
