Prehnite is a phyllosilicate mineral of calcium and aluminium, most commonly found in its characteristic soft, translucent pale green to yellow-green form, though it can also occur in white, grey, and occasionally yellow. It forms in cavities and veins of basaltic and granitic rocks through hydrothermal processes, often in association with Epidote, Calcite, and Zeolite minerals. Its distinctive soft, waxy to vitreous lustre and gentle, luminous green colour — reminiscent of a dewy spring meadow — make it one of the most immediately recognisable and beloved stones in the mineral world. Australia, particularly the region of Broken Hill in New South Wales, is one of the most historically significant sources of Prehnite, and the stone was actually the first mineral to be named after a person — Dutch Colonel Hendrik von Prehn, who brought specimens to Europe from South Africa in the 18th century.
