Serpentine is not a single mineral but rather a group of related magnesium silicate minerals — most commonly Antigorite, Lizardite, and Chrysotile — that share a characteristic mottled, waxy to silky appearance in shades of green ranging from pale yellow-green and olive to deep forest and blackish green, often with veining or patterning of white, yellow, or black that gives the stone a striking resemblance to the scales of a serpent, from which it takes its name. It forms through a metamorphic process known as serpentinisation, in which water reacts with iron and magnesium-rich rocks deep within the earth's crust and upper mantle, transforming them into Serpentine over millions of years. New Zealand's Māori people have long prized a variety of Serpentine known as Tangiwai — a translucent, pale green bowenite — as a sacred stone of great cultural and spiritual significance. It is frequently confused with Jade in the crystal market, as some varieties closely resemble Nephrite or Jadeite in colour and appearance, and it is sometimes marketed as "New Jade" or "Serpentine Jade."
