Phantom Quartz is a variety of Quartz crystal containing one or more ghost-like crystal formations visible within its interior — known as phantoms — that record the growth history of the crystal over millions of years. A phantom forms when a Quartz crystal's growth is interrupted by a change in environmental conditions, causing a thin layer of another mineral — most commonly Chlorite, producing green phantoms; Hematite, producing red or orange phantoms; or fine Quartz dust, producing white or grey phantoms — to settle on the crystal's surface before growth resumes and encapsulates the deposit within the new Quartz layer. The result is a ghostly outline of the crystal's earlier form preserved in perfect three-dimensional detail within the body of the finished crystal, sometimes with multiple phantoms stacked within one another like Russian dolls, each recording a distinct episode in the crystal's growth history spanning hundreds of millions of years. Brazil and Madagascar are the most significant sources of fine Phantom Quartz specimens, with Austrian Alpine Chlorite Phantoms among the most prized by collectors.
