Carnelian is a translucent to opaque variety of Chalcedony, a microcrystalline form of Quartz, whose warm red, orange, and amber tones are caused by iron oxide impurities within its structure. It forms in volcanic and sedimentary rocks through the slow deposition of silica-rich fluids, and its colour can range from pale peach to deep reddish-brown depending on the concentration and oxidation state of the iron present. It has been prized since antiquity — ancient Egyptians called it "the setting sun" and used it extensively in jewellery, amulets, and burial adornments. Napoleon famously wore a Carnelian seal ring taken from Egypt, which he used to stamp his letters throughout his campaigns.
