About This Collection
Peridot is the gem variety of Olivine, a magnesium iron silicate mineral and one of the most abundant minerals in the earth's mantle, forming deep within the earth under conditions of extreme heat and pressure and brought to the surface through volcanic activity and tectonic processes. It is one of the very few gemstones that occurs in only a single colour — an olive to vivid lime green — with the intensity and hue of the green determined by the ratio of iron to magnesium within its crystal structure; the finest specimens display a rich, saturated grass green with no yellow or brown undertones. Peridot is also found in meteorites — specifically in pallasite meteorites, where it occurs as gem-quality crystals embedded within an iron-nickel matrix — making it one of the few gemstones with an extraterrestrial origin. The ancient Egyptians mined Peridot on the remote volcanic island of Zabargad in the Red Sea for over 3,500 years, calling it the "Gem of the Sun" and believing it to be the tears of the volcano goddess Pele. Pakistan's Kohistan region and the San Carlos Apache Reservation in Arizona are among the most significant modern sources of fine gem-quality Peridot.
