Smoky Quartz is a macrocrystalline variety of Quartz whose characteristic smoky brown to deep black colouration is caused by natural irradiation of aluminium-containing Quartz over millions of years — the same process that occurs artificially when Clear Quartz is irradiated to produce the darker tones seen in some commercial material. The deepest, near-opaque black variety is known as Morion — a name with roots in ancient Latin and widely used in European mineralogical tradition, particularly in German and Spanish-speaking countries, to describe the darkest end of the Smoky Quartz spectrum. While not a scientifically distinct species, the Morion name has endured as a useful descriptor for near-opaque black Smoky Quartz of exceptional depth and intensity, and it remains in common use among collectors and in the European crystal trade today. Scotland has a particularly deep cultural connection to Smoky Quartz — known there as Cairngorm, after the Cairngorm Mountains where it has been mined for centuries — and it holds the distinction of being Scotland's national gemstone, historically used in Highland jewellery and the handles of traditional Scottish daggers known as sgian-dubhs. Brazil is the world's most significant commercial source, producing the vast majority of fine Smoky Quartz available in the global crystal market.
